A balanced outdoor lighting design combines several types of light instead of relying on one bright fixture. Start with the activities and features you want to make visible, then use these layers:
- Ambient lighting: Provide a gentle overall glow with suitably shielded fixtures or reflected light.
- Task lighting: Illuminate areas used for cooking, dining, or steps so people can see what they are doing.
- Accent lighting: Draw attention to a tree, textured wall, or garden feature with a focused beam.
Keep light directed where it is useful. Shielded fixtures and careful aiming help reduce glare into windows and avoid shining unnecessarily into the sky or neighboring yards. Use a consistent, warm tone for a calm, cohesive feel, and add dimmers or separate controls so different areas can be adjusted independently.
Before choosing fixtures, consider how the space looks from inside the home as well as outdoors. A few well-placed points of light usually create more depth and comfort than evenly lighting every surface.
