Plan child safety into a DIY landscaping pond before digging. Young children can drown in very shallow water, so a shallow shelf or gently sloped edge should not be treated as a substitute for supervision or a barrier.
- Use a secure barrier: Where appropriate, install a fence or enclosure that limits unsupervised access. Check local building rules for requirements such as height, gates, and latches.
- Choose a child-resistant gate: Make sure it closes and latches securely, and keep nearby chairs, planters, or other climbable objects away from the barrier.
- Keep the pond visible: Avoid placing tall plants or decorative structures where they block the view from the house or usual play areas.
- Secure covers properly: Use only a cover specifically designed and rated for the pond. Loose netting can create an entanglement hazard, and a lightweight cover may not support a child’s weight.
- Set clear rules: Teach children that the pond is not a play area, and keep toys out of the water so they are not tempted to reach in.
Active adult supervision is essential whenever children are near water, even when a fence or cover is in place. Recheck barriers, latches, and covers regularly, especially after storms or landscaping work. If the pond is near a shared boundary or public area, confirm applicable local safety rules before building.
